Planning a project or replacing worn buttons? Here's a quick guide to typical button counts and sizes for common garments. And if you find a button that you love but don't have a current use for – buy six. The right project will come along.
Shirts and Blouses
A standard button-front shirt may use 10–12 buttons in total:
Front placket: 6–8 buttons (10–15 mm). (Men's dress shirts have 8.)
Cuffs: 2–4 (10 mm)
Collar: 1–2 (10 mm)
Sleeve placket: 0–2 (10 mm)
Many shirts use one size throughout for simplicity.
Cardigans and Knit Jackets
Round-neck cardigans have 5–7 buttons down the front (15–20 mm), though cropped styles may have fewer and longer designs may have more. Chunky knits suit larger buttons; fine gauge knits look better with smaller ones.
Blazers and Sport Jackets
A single-breasted blazer may use 8–11 buttons, depending on design:
Front: 2–3 buttons (20–23 mm)
Sleeves: 3–4 per sleeve, 6–8 total (15 mm)
Double-breasted styles need more – typically 10–14 buttons with 4–6 on the front.
Coats and Outerwear
A single-breasted coat may use 10–14 buttons, depending on design:
Front: 4–6 buttons (23–32 mm)
Sleeves: 3–4 per sleeve, 6–8 total (15–18 mm)
Back vent: 0–2 (15–18 mm)
Double-breasted coats may need 14–18 buttons or more. Heavy winter coats tend toward the larger end of the size range.
